I came across a new girl group called OURBIRTHDAY, and something confused me right away.
They’re supposed to be a seven-member group.
But when I watched HUNGRY (Side A), there were only three members.
Then there was HUNGRY (Side B) with four.
3 + 4.
Okay, that makes seven.
At first, I figured they were just splitting the members into two units before debut.
But both teams were performing the exact same song.
HUNGRY.
I watched Side A first, and honestly, nothing looked missing.
There were only three members, but the choreography felt completely natural. It looked like it had been made for three people from the beginning.
Then I watched Side B.
Same thing.
Four members this time, but again, it just looked like normal four-member choreography.
So I assumed they were showing two different versions of the same song.
Then I saw a video combining both performances.
Wait. This was one choreography the whole time?
The three Side A members and four Side B members somehow never crashed into each other.
The spaces I thought were just empty in Side A were actually where the Side B members were dancing.
And the empty spaces in Side B?
That’s where Side A fit in.
Separately, they looked like a complete three-member choreography and a complete four-member choreography.
But they had actually been one seven-member choreography from the beginning.
And that’s when I wanted to know more about the group.
Okay, who exactly are OURBIRTHDAY?
So, who are OURBIRTHDAY?
OURBIRTHDAY is a seven-member multinational girl group that officially debuted on August 19, 2026.
The members are Kook Chorok, Shin Hyewon, Jo Hyejin, U, Baby, Achiraya, and Kilala.
The lineup includes three Korean members, two Japanese members, one Taiwanese member, and one Thai member.
While looking up the members, I realized a few of them had already appeared on survival shows.
Jo Hyejin was the winner of The Ddanddara, while U finished third on the same show.
Shin Hyewon had also appeared on R U Next?
Then I got curious about the group name.
OURBIRTHDAY.
Was this literally a group about birthdays?
Kind of.
The idea behind the name is about enjoying everyday moments with the same freedom and excitement you feel on your birthday.
Birthdays just feel different, right?
You’re a little more excited than usual, and even an ordinary day somehow feels special.
That’s basically how I understood the idea behind OURBIRTHDAY — bringing that feeling into everyday moments instead of saving it for one day a year.
And thankfully, there is a shorter official name.
OBD.
Much easier. 😂
So if you see people talking about OBD, they’re talking about OURBIRTHDAY.
Wait, if they’re under INNIT, why does JYP keep showing up?
While looking up the members, I noticed their agency was listed as INNIT Entertainment.
But JYP kept showing up everywhere.
Park Jin-young had appeared on TV giving the members advice, and OURBIRTHDAY’s music videos were being uploaded to JYP’s official YouTube channel.
So naturally, I wondered:
Are they a JYP girl group?
Not exactly.
OURBIRTHDAY is officially signed to INNIT Entertainment.
Then I looked into INNIT and found out that it’s a wholly owned subsidiary of JYP Entertainment.
Ah.
That explained it.
But that still doesn’t mean OURBIRTHDAY is directly signed to JYP Entertainment in the same way as TWICE, ITZY, or NMIXX.
The easiest way for me to understand it was:
OURBIRTHDAY is signed to INNIT Entertainment, and INNIT is owned by JYP Entertainment.
Once I figured that out, the whole JYP/INNIT thing made way more sense.
And HUNGRY isn’t even their debut title track
Here’s something else I got wrong.
After watching HUNGRY over and over, I naturally assumed it was OURBIRTHDAY’s debut title track.
Nope.
OURBIRTHDAY officially debuted on August 19, 2026, with their first single album 《Our Birthday》, and the actual title track is SQUEEZY.
There are four tracks:
- Our Birthday
- SQUEEZY
- HUNGRY (Side A)
- HUNGRY (Side B)
The first track, Our Birthday, connects the group’s beginning with the idea of a birthday.
Then there’s the title track, SQUEEZY, a funk-based dance song.
When I first saw the title, I wondered what SQUEEZY was supposed to mean.
It comes from the idea of those squishy toys you squeeze in your hand and then watch return to their original shape.
The song is about letting go of complicated emotions and stress, almost like squeezing them out instead of holding onto them.
And then there is the song that introduced me to the group in the first place: HUNGRY.
Both Side A and Side B versions are included separately on the single.
And HUNGRY isn’t actually about being hungry for food either.
It’s about being hungry for the stage.
If I had seen the tracklist before watching any of their performances, I probably would’ve wondered why HUNGRY was on there twice.
But after seeing Side A and Side B, that part made perfect sense.
If you’re watching HUNGRY, try this order
If you’re checking out OURBIRTHDAY for the first time, I actually recommend watching HUNGRY in a specific order.
Start with Side A.
Just watch the three members.
Then watch Side B with the other four.
And if you can, don’t watch the full seven-member version yet.
That’s what makes this more fun.
Neither performance looks as empty as you might expect.
I honestly thought they were two separate, complete choreographies when I first watched them.
Then, after you’ve seen both sides, watch the full seven-member HUNGRY performance.
That’s when you’ll see the Side B members filling the spaces you barely noticed in Side A, while the Side A members fit into the spaces left in Side B.
That was the moment when I finally went:
“Ohhh. This was one choreography from the beginning.”
So I’d definitely recommend watching it in this order:
Side A → Side B → Full 7-member version.
You might suddenly notice all those “empty” spaces you didn’t even think were empty the first time.
And you might end up going back to Side A and Side B afterward just to watch them again.
I did. 😅
