Today, we’re talking about “갑자기 (Suddenly)” by I.O.I, the title track from their third mini album I.O.I : LOOP, released on May 19, 2026. 💫
I.O.I was originally formed through Mnet’s survival show Produce 101 in 2016.
The group became one of the biggest examples of how successful a project group from a survival show could become, and their popularity helped pave the way for later groups like Wanna One and IZ*ONE.
After ending their original activities in 2017, the members continued their careers as singers, actors and entertainers.
Then, in 2026, I.O.I reunited to celebrate their 10th anniversary. ✨
This comeback features nine members:
Lim Nayoung, Chungha, Kim Sejeong, Jung Chaeyeon, Kim Sohye, Yeonjung, Choi Yoojung, Kim Doyeon and Jeon Somi.
Kang Mina and Zhou Jie Qiong were unable to participate because of previously scheduled commitments.
💫 What Does “갑자기” Mean?
The Korean word 갑자기 (gapjagi) means:
“suddenly”
or
“all of a sudden.”
And that word perfectly captures the feeling of the song.
“갑자기” is about those moments when memories you thought you had already moved on from suddenly come back.
You might be lying in bed.
You might be stuck in traffic.
You might be doing absolutely nothing special.
And then suddenly, you think of someone.
That’s the emotional core of this song.
🕰️ Ten Years Later
I.O.I : LOOP is built around the idea of emotions and relationships reconnecting after ten years.
The album looks back at memories from the past while also focusing on the members as they are now.
It contains six tracks:
IOI (Where My Girls At)
갑자기 (Suddenly)
SPF 100+ (Summer Pop Fantasy)
IF I
그때 우리 지금 (Then, Now and Forever)
웃으며 안녕 (Recorded in 2016) (Prod. Jinyoung)
That last track is especially meaningful because it connects directly back to I.O.I’s original era.
The whole album really feels like a loop.
Something that stopped years ago suddenly starts moving again.
🎧 How Does “갑자기” Sound?
“갑자기” is a synth-pop track built around dreamy synth lines, a minimal beat and a soft emotional atmosphere.
Instead of trying to recreate exactly how I.O.I sounded ten years ago, the song feels more mature and reflective.
There’s nostalgia in it, but it doesn’t feel stuck in the past.
The arrangement stays relatively restrained at first, allowing the emotion of the lyrics to carry the song.
Then, as the track moves toward the outro, the emotion gradually grows stronger.
That slow build makes the song feel almost like a memory becoming clearer and clearer in your head.
💭 Missing Someone Out of Nowhere
One of my favorite things about the lyrics is how ordinary the situations are.
There’s no huge dramatic event.
Someone is just lying in bed.
Someone is sitting in traffic.
And suddenly, an old memory comes back.
That feels very real.
Sometimes the strongest memories don’t come when we’re actively trying to remember someone.
They appear when we least expect them.
And that’s why the title “갑자기” works so well.

💡 Korean Tip with Student1
There are some really useful Korean expressions in “갑자기,” so let’s learn a few!
⚡ 갑자기 (Gapjagi)
갑자기 means:
“suddenly”
or
“all of a sudden.”
It’s one of the most common Korean words used when something happens unexpectedly.
For example:
갑자기 비가 왔어.
Gapjagi biga wasseo.
= “It suddenly started raining.”
💭 그리움 (Geurium)
그리움 means “longing” or “the feeling of missing someone.”
It’s a very emotional Korean word.
It doesn’t just mean that you remember someone.
It describes that deeper feeling of wanting to see someone again.
🧠 생각에 잠기다 (Saenggage Jamgida)
생각에 잠기다 literally means:
“to sink into thought.”
A natural English translation would be:
“to get lost in thought.”
So:
너에 대한 생각에 잠겨
means:
“I get lost in thoughts of you.”
🌅 노을 (Noeul)
노을 means the colorful glow in the sky around sunset or sunrise.
In this song, 빨간 노을빛 means:
“red sunset light.”
It gives the memory in the lyrics a warm and nostalgic feeling.
🎭 괜찮은 척 (Gwaenchaneun Cheok)
괜찮다 = to be okay
척하다 = to pretend
So:
괜찮은 척
means:
“pretending to be okay.”
It’s a very common expression in emotional K-pop lyrics.
💭 Student1’s Take
For me, “갑자기” works so well because it doesn’t try too hard to make the reunion feel dramatic.
I.O.I disappeared from group promotions for years.
The members grew up.
Fans grew up too.
And then suddenly, they were together again.
That makes a song about unexpected memories feel almost perfect for their 10th anniversary.
The 80s-inspired synth-pop sound also gives the song a nostalgic feeling without making it sound old-fashioned.
And honestly, seeing members who haven’t been as active in idol promotions lately together again in the music video makes the whole thing feel even more special.
Then, at the end of the video, everything suddenly turns playful.
Just like the title says:
갑자기.
Sometimes memories come back suddenly.
And sometimes a group you thought you might never see together again suddenly comes back too. 💫
